Finding A Better Garage Door

Winter is almost here, which means it's time to make sure your garage door is in tiptop shape. It's never fun to have problems with your garage door, but during the winter it can be particularly unpleasant. This is particularly true if you're dealing with freezing temperatures and snow. To make sure you don't have problems with your garage door this winter, here are four steps you should take before the cold weather arrives.

Start with Your Roof

When it comes to preparing your garage door for winter, the first thing you need to do is address any roofing problems you may have. You might not realize this but if your roof leaks during the winter, it could destroy your garage door opener, especially if the leak is directly over your garage. Before winter arrives, inspect your roof and take care of any necessary repairs.

Make Sure Your Remote is Ready for Winter

If it's been a while since you serviced your garage door remote, now's the time to take care of that. It's especially important that you replace the batteries. Cold weather and excessive moisture can wreak havoc on your batteries. If they're already worn down and ready to die, you could get stuck outside. To avoid being stuck outside when the batteries die in your remote, make sure you switch them out with new ones before winter arrives. It's actually a good idea to change the batteries in your remote each time the season changes. That way, you know that your batteries are replaced at least four times a year.

Replace Worn-Out Weather Stripping

If you've still got the original weather stripping around your garage door, or it's been a few years since it was replaced, it's time to take care of that. The weather stripping is exposed to all the elements, all year long. Unfortunately, extreme heat and cold can cause the weather stripping to rot. To make sure your weather stripping is able to keep the cold weather and the rain out of your garage, be sure to replace it before the weather turns brutal this year.

Apply Silicon Spray to the Door

If you're expecting freezing temperatures this winter, now's the time to prepare your door. Freezing temperatures can cause the weather stripping around your door to actually freeze to the ground. If that happens, you're going to have a hard time getting your garage door to open. To make sure your weather stripping doesn't freeze to the ground, apply a generous amount of silicon spray along the bottom edge of your garage door.
