Garage door systems are not very complex, and there are times when you will be able to problem-solve issues on your own. If your garage door opener won't turn on, the problem could be as simple as a tripped circuit breaker. It is possible that you have a small pebble or piece of debris in your track, causing the garage door to reverse direction. Loose tension springs are a common problem with garage doors, and this will need to be addressed by a repair technician. If your garage door won't move, or it doesn't stay open all the way, a repair technician will be able to make any needed repairs for you.
The Garage Door Opens Slow
If you hear a straining noise as your garage door opens, this can be caused by loose tension springs. Your opener gets help from the tension springs, as they hold the heavy weight of your garage door as it opens and closes. When your door opens slowly, this is a sign that the opener is having mechanical issues, or the tension springs are loose. Sometimes the problem is caused by both the opener and loose tension springs.
Your Garage Door Changes Direction
The garage door can change direction when there is a problem along the track preventing further movement. You might also have the door in reverse direction if it is near the bottom and the two photo-eyes are not making contact. If there is something in the way to prevent the door from closing, the photo-eyes will not be able to send signals. Sometimes a leaf will blow onto the sensor, or one gets bumped and they don't face each other. Loose brackets can make your tracks slightly uneven. If you have a bend in a track, these will need to be replaced by a technician for your door to work properly.
If you are having trouble with your garage door system, check to see that the opener is plugged in. If you have power to the unit, try using the wall button to engage the door instead of your remote. If these don't work, you can try pushing the sensor on the back of your opener. Make sure the door isn't locked, and that there isn't something in the way preventing the door from moving along the track. If you can't fix the problem yourself, let a garage door technician come repair the system for you.
