A Week on
Lake Como
Lake Como in the Fall of 2009 was one
of our most successful destinations. We are
very excited with what we have put together! It really is an incredibly beautiful area. The mountains, the villas and gardens, the movement of the
ferries between the towns on mid-lake, the way the scenery changes
constantly with the light. We were fortunate to have been
introduced to the locals, steered to the best restaurants and wine
producers, and showed the hidden gems and the local knowledge that we
need to make Lake Como a Papillon destination.
We were all hugely impressed with what we tasted there. Many of the recipes
and ingredients that we tend to think of broadly as 'Italian' are actually
from Lombardy. And the quality is simply amazing. Taken down
to the microcosm of lakeside, we find a local cuisine as real and as varied
as any we have seen. And the wine is a revelation. Especially
the Nebbiolos from the Valtellina, just to the north of the lake: think
Piedmonte meets Burgundy!
As for the property, our period-piece Villa Meridiana is situated right on
the shore of the lake with stunning views of the surrounding mountains, and
wonderful dining spots to enjoy them from. The house was formerly an
auberge, so Ellie is thrilled with her spacious professional kitchen.
